The Sandbox ($SAND) COO on the Future of the Ethereum-Powered Metaverse

In a recent interview, Sébastien Borget, a co-founder and the chief operating officer (COO) of The Sandbox, said that he feels the Ethereum-powered metaverse is “a digital nation”.

The Sandbox ($SAND) COO on the Future of the Ethereum-Powered Metaverse

Virtual Field What Is It?
Sandbox is a subsidiary of Animoca Brands.

Animoca Brands was founded in January 2014 by Yat-Siu and David Kim, and its various subsidiaries develop, and very popular games blockchain Global Brands, Formula 1 ® , Disney, WWE, Power Rangers, MotoGP ™ and far Doraemon based on the traditional games, and publish a broad portfolio of other products. Animoca Brands is also a prolific investor with over 100 investments in NFT-related blockchain companies such as Sky Mavis (Axie Infinity), Dapper Labs (NBA Top Shot), OpenSea, Harmony, Bitski and Alien Worlds.”

Here's how Binance Research described the Sandbox in August 2020:

“Ethereum is a virtual world built on the blockchain, where virtual players can create, own and monetize their gaming experiences... A TOOL used as a flexing and management TOOL for SAND token value transfers, a -20 program indicator. Digital assets in the form of Non-Player-(NFTs) can upload marketable Tokens, which can be met and sundays integrated into the game with Game Maker (NFTs).“

And here's how the Sandbox team defines SAND and SOIL:

"SAND is a utility token that is used as the basis for transactions and interactions in the Sandbox ecosystem. Ethereum is an ERC-20 utility token built on the blockchain. There is a finite supply of 3,000,000,000 SAND.“

"Virtual Mailboxes are parts of the world that are formed in this LAND, belonging to players create and gain experiences. Only 166,464 plots of land will be available, which can be used to host games, create multiplayer experiences, build housing or provide social experiences to the community.“

According to data from Ethereum-backed NFT marketplace Opensea, currently (as of 6:55 UTC on January 12), the cheapest land you can buy in the Sandbox metaverse is ETH 3.45 (which is roughly around $11,000 at the time of this writing).

On November 2, 2021, Sandbox announced that it had managed to raise $93 million in the latest funding round led by Vision Fund 2, the second venture capital fund of the SoftBank Group.

coo's Interview with Decrypt Turned Into a Sandbox
Last month, Virtual Space CEO Sébastien Borget told crypto news outlet Decrypt that although the ”play-to-earn" metaverse has not yet been released, many people had been trading parcels of LAND before this event:

“Every day the map is different. There are new landowners and new communities who have decided to build something side by side. I feel like a digital nation that lives and breathes. It's so exciting. It is culturally rich, global and accessible.“

Borget said he felt a little apprehensive about allowing people to take part in last month's public Alpha test:

“It's almost a fear of jumping into the void and getting a lot of backlash and other criticism. Maybe people will walk in there and say: 'Oh, is that it? Metaverse- is it really that boring? It looks ugly, it's full of bugs, maybe it's not much fun. And nothing like that happened.“

Last month, Sébastien Borget, CEO of Sandbox, told crypto news outlet Decrypt that although the "play-to-earn" metaverse has not been released into the general game, many have traded LAND parcels before this event:

"His day map is different. There are new communities with new landowners and those who decided to build something side by side. I feel like a digital nation that lives and breathes. It's so exciting. It is rich in cultural, global and accessible.“

Borget said he felt a little over letting people participate in last month's public open Alpha test:

"It's almost a fear of jumping into the void and getting too much backlash and other criticism. Maybe people will go there and say: 'Oh, is that it? Metaverse- is it really that boring? He sees it's ugly, it's full of bugs, maybe it's worth having fun. And nothing like that happened.“
As for his future plans, Borget told Decrypt that his initiative plans:

start more playtest events (every few months)
move the metaverse to the Polygon because it is faster and cheaper to use than ethereum
Launch a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to give landowners a voice in the management process
Finally, Borget said:

“The Metaverse must be built by the people. When they build with our tools and create experiences that will be available to the public - and we live on tier-2 to publish experiences on their own land - I think this will be a great time to start.”

The Price Movement of $Sand
According to Cryptocompare's data, currently (as of 7:26 UTC on January 12) $SAND is trading around $4,789, up 7.4% over the last 24-hour period.
